The Guatemalan Caribbean coast is a critical biodiversity hotspot—home to nearly 7% of the world’s bird species and several endangered mammals—yet it faces increasing threats from deforestation, unsustainable agriculture, and lack of economic opportunities for local communities. Globally, the aviation industry contributes approximately 2.4% of carbon emissions, placing immense pressure on airlines like Delta to find sustainable ways to neutralize their carbon footprint. The broader challenge for Delta is to develop a conservation model that not only offset carbon emissions but also addresses the environmental and social needs of a vulnerable region.
In collaboration with the social action platform, Global Citizen, and Delta Air Lines, we directed and produced a short film showcasing the Guatemalan Conservation Coast Project. This film has been utilized as a tool for education and to increase corporate support for conservation and climate change projects.
The Guatemalan Conservation Coast Project is a multi-sectoral carbon offset initiative that combines forest conservation with community development. Funded in part by Delta Air Lines’ carbon neutrality commitment, the program protects vital ecosystems, supports sustainable agriculture, and empowers indigenous communities—particularly women. This holistic approach to carbon offsetting offers long-term environmental benefits while fostering local economic resilience. By preserving forests that naturally absorb carbon and supporting community-led conservation, the project turns carbon offsetting into an engine for sustainable development.
